If you’re looking for a game that you’ll never want to put down, look no further. Magic Rush: Heroes is a constantly evolving strategy role playing game that never lets you catch your breath. From small-scale battles to epic kingdom conflicts, dungeon crawling to tower defense, Magic Rush blends all of the best mobile genres into one endlessly replayable strategy game.
Although the game is vast and epic in scope, it starts with a humble beginning. Your heroes are trapped in conflict with a soul-stealing knight, and he has them cornered. As enemy troops invade, your heroes attempt to divert them, but are quickly thwarted. With your fellow heroes down for the count, the knight steals their souls and turns them against you. You’re only just able to escape with your life, and one ally who you summon from the Wishing Pool.
From a gameplay standpoint, the Wishing Pool is the game’s equivalent of a slot machine. You put in magical currency to make a wish, and the game will spit out a hero for your party. Sometimes it’ll reward you with a rare hero, with ultra-powerful stats that can easily turn the tide of a battle. In the case of your first wish, you’ll always get the same hero, making the tutorial easier for you to get through.
Once your party has retreated, it’s time for them to power up and strike back. Here, you’ll start your journey across a massive world map filled with side missions and dangerous enemies. Each node on the map is a new battle, in which you lead your heroes against enemies in up close and personal battles. Each hero has their own special skill that builds over time, and you can activate them by manually tapping and aiming them. These skills kick off an impressive series of effects, and always turn the tide of battle in your favor.
Side missions play out a little differently. Every time you see a crystal on the map, you can tap it to start a tower defense mission. In these missions, your heroes are the towers, and all of their skills and special abilities translate into a top-down view, with new animations and effects. You can upgrade your heroes over the course of these missions, and even choose new heroes to place on the map.
Once you’ve reached a certain point in the campaign, you’ll start unlocking new difficulties. At this point, you can go back and replay old missions. This time around, the missions will have new enemy patterns and more challenging battles. In return, you’ll gain massive amounts of experience.
Your heroes grow more powerful as you work your way through the world. As you battle, heroes level up and their stats grow higher and higher. But you’ll also collect runes, which you can give to heroes to apply passive bonuses. Slot enough runes on a hero, and you’ll be able to evolve them to a new, stronger form. Each hero has tons of forms to discover, so you’ll never be at a shortage of new content to discover.
Most games would call it a day here. But with Magic Rush, this is only the tip of the iceberg. After you’ve reached a certain level, a PvP Arena will open. Here, you can pit your heroes against those of other players to see who has the strongest team. You can strategically ban heroes from another player’s team, so if your opponent has a healer who keeps curing your enemies, for example, you can ban that hero and go into battle with an advantage.
A little while later, you’ll unlock a dungeon that you can enter each day. In these RPG segments, you’ll be able to press further into the dungeon for greater rewards. The longer you can last without dying, the stronger the loot you collect will be.
After this unlock, the game shifts play styles dramatically. You’ll unlock an entirely new world to explore – a massive RTS overworld where real players compete for resources in real time. You’ll have to branch out from your kingdom, conquer other territories, and send your heroes to battle other players in order to secure a stronger kingdom. As you collect resources, you’ll be able to infuse them into your kingdom, making it stronger as you go. You can also post heroes on your kingdom’s wall to defend against invasion.
Luckily, you won’t be limited to battling other heroes. You can also join alliances, where you’ll team up with other players to battle, chat, and share strategies.
Whew, that’s a whole lot of mechanics for one game. But it’s worth noting that Magic Rush doesn’t introduce all of them right away. In fact, it’s actually paced very well, and continues to introduce a steady ramp of new content for dozens of hours. Each time you think the game can’t get any bigger, you’ll be surprised to find a new challenge waiting for you. It helps keep the game fresh and fun for weeks on end.
Magic Rush is such a comprehensive game, it’s likely to take over your life entirely. Even as the game introduces new types of battles, each retains its own unique strategies and play styles. And with the added depth of hero upgrades, PvP gameplay, and alliances, you’ll be able to keep playing and discovering new experiences for as long as you want.
