Redungeon, like many mobile games, has been greatly influenced by the games made before it. In this case, games like Crossy Road and Crossy Dungeon were obviously studied intently by the development team at Nitrome.
That’s not a bad thing. Often the very best apps are those that build off older games, but add enough polish and extra content that the experience becomes must-play. My favorite example of this is popular game Plague Inc, which modeled itself, and innovated off several similar games released before it in order to come up with a masterpiece that is perpetually at the top of the mobile charts.
Like games such as Crossy Road, Redungeon tasks you to navigate a perilous grid-based area by moving your hero one square at a time. In your way are numerous enemies; everything from pointy spikes to poisonous spiders are out to kill you. From any position you may move up, down, left or right. Knowing which direction to traverse, and when to time those movements is crucial to making it farther and farther into the dungeon without dying.
Also in the dungeon is great treasure for you to collect. By maneuvering around the map, your hero can also collect colored gems and unlock chests to gain credits that remain even after your run comes to an end.
These gems play the key role in upgrading your hero for future runs. While you at first start with a single un-upgraded hero, it is with the treasure found that you can unlock new heroes, as well as power up the ones you already have. The first upgrade for your starting hero earns him a shield which allows him to take an extra hit before dying. The first character unlock never gets stuck in spider webs. Different characters behave differently as well, so it’s worth your while to unlock them and see which character best fits your play style.
Collecting enough treasure to unlock things can be a slow process, so you may be tempted to speed things up. You can gain coins by watching sponsored videos, as well as purchasing them for real money in the shop. We chose not to purchase anything in my play through, but the prices seemed fair for what you receive. This is a Free-to-Play game through and through.
What we liked most about Redungeon was its sense of reward for playing the game, and really learning how to handle different environments and puzzles. The dungeon maps are randomly generated, but individual sections will appear again and again, and it is crucial to master those specific mini-puzzles in order to travel further and further into the dungeon. Considering time speeds up as you make it deeper, at some point there is no time to think about your next move before making it. While buying power ups will give you an edge in your game, it’s by learning and understand how to play each section that you will truly make it deep into the dungeon.
Redungeon is free to download, and extremely simple to pick up and play. We recommend it to fans of similar hopping games like Crossy Road, as well as anyone looking for a quick, fun experience that will have you constantly sticking around for just one more run.
